Dan Hurley: A Basketball Legacy That Spans Three Generations

From Son of a High School Legend to Father of a Walk-On Guard

Dan Hurley's impact on the game of basketball is undeniable. As the head coach of the University of Connecticut Huskies, he has led the team to numerous tournament appearances and victories. However, Hurley's legacy extends beyond his own accomplishments to include a family deeply intertwined with the sport.

Hurley's Humble Beginnings

Dan Hurley is the son of one of the greatest high school basketball coaches in history, Bob Hurley Sr., and the younger brother of Bobby Hurley, a standout point guard for Duke University and the Sacramento Kings.

Despite his famous lineage, Dan Hurley worked hard to establish his own identity in the sport. After a successful playing career at Seton Hall University, he embarked on a coaching career that has included stints at Wagner College, Rhode Island, and, most recently, UConn.

A Father-Son Reunion

In 2020, Dan Hurley's son, Andrew, joined the UConn men's basketball team as a walk-on guard.

Andrew Hurley, a product of East Catholic High School, where his father had previously coached, had limited playing time during his first season with the Huskies.

A March Madness Moment

However, in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, Andrew Hurley played a pivotal role in UConn's victory over Arkansas. He entered the game late and provided a spark with his aggressive defense and energy. After the game, Dan Hurley was overcome with emotion as he embraced his son on the court.

The Hurley family's basketball legacy is remarkable. From Bob Hurley Sr.'s high school championship teams to Dan Hurley's college success, and now with Andrew Hurley's contributions at UConn, the family's impact on the game is undeniable.

The father-son duo of Dan and Andrew Hurley represents the latest chapter in this basketball dynasty. Together, they are continuing to write the story of the Hurley family legacy, a legacy that has left an indelible mark on the sport.
